Ghana, China to formalise climate cooperation with MOU

Ghana and China are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalise their growing partnership on climate cooperation.

China has already announced plans to roll out more than 30 renewable energy projects across Africa over the next three years, with Ghana expected to be a major beneficiary.

Speaking at the maiden Ghana-China Climate Summit in Accra, Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu, described the engagement as a decisive moment for Ghana, Africa, and the world.

Beyond climate policy, Mr. Issifu proposed the establishment of a Ghana-China Climate Business Summit to bring together investors, innovators, and entrepreneurs from both countries.

“Such a platform will go beyond policy dialogue and allow us to showcase the best of Ghanaian and Chinese innovation in addressing climate change. It will bring together investors, entrepreneurs, financiers, and innovators to explore opportunities in renewable energy, circular economy, green agriculture, digital sustainability, and climate-resilient infrastructure,” he said.

Executive Director of the Africa-China Centre for Policy and Advisory (ACCPA), Paul Frimpong, confirmed that both governments had agreed to sign the MOU soon. He noted that although the agreement was not finalised at the summit, a joint implementation team would be established to deliver concrete outcomes.

“For the first time, Ghana and China are now talking the same language, on the same platform as you’ve seen here, to ensure that the two countries align their national and local priorities when it comes to climate change,” he explained.

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, also addressed the gathering, reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to deepening green partnerships with Africa.

He stressed that China views Ghana as a key strategic partner in West Africa and expressed support for aligning national priorities with China’s renewable energy rollout across the continent.
