Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, has issued a stern warning to illegal miners in the region, urging them to halt their activities or risk facing a minimum of 10 years imprisonment.
He gave the caution while addressing the Banda District Assembly during the confirmation ceremony of the President’s nominee, Peter Dongi, as the District Chief Executive for Banda at Banda-Ahenkro.
Akwaboa emphasised the government’s firm stance against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and assured that any individual caught engaging in the act would face full prosecution.
“Our forefathers safeguarded these resources for us, and we must also make frantic efforts to protect them for future generations,” he said.
The Minister reiterated the need for collective action in combating the menace, noting the environmental and economic toll of illegal mining activities.
“In fact, if apprehended, individuals engaged in that harmful practice will face severe consequences,” he warned.
Akwaboa also highlighted the damage illegal mining is causing to critical national infrastructure, particularly the Bui Generating Station, and called for urgent action to protect such assets.
He urged the newly confirmed DCE to work hand-in-hand with Assembly Members to address illegal mining and spearhead development initiatives in the district.
Calling for broader community involvement, Akwaboa appealed to traditional leaders and residents alike to support efforts to preserve the region’s natural resources.
He also encouraged unemployed youth to explore the job creation initiatives rolled out under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, urging them to pursue more sustainable and lawful livelihoods.
