A high-powered delegation from the University of Seychelles (UniSey) has wrapped up a historic educational tour of four Ghanaian universities, as part of moves to increase partnership between the two nations in the field of higher education.
The week-long visit, which commenced on March 25 and ended on March 31, 2025, was led by UniSey Vice Chancellor Ms. Joëlle Perreau, alongside Dr. Justin Zelime, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Development; Mr. Shawn Berlouis, Director of Finance and Business Development; and Ms. Dolivette Chang-Ko, Director of Marketing, Communications and Stakeholder Engagement. The tour followed the broader Ghana-Seychelles educational cooperation initiated during Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan’s visit to Ghana in November 2024.
Facilitated by the Honorary Consulate of Seychelles in Ghana, the delegation engaged with four leading institutions—Central University, the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), the University of Cape Coast (UCC), and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)—to explore collaboration in academic exchanges, research, curriculum development, and cultural partnerships.
The first stop was at Central University’s Prampram campus, where the UniSey team was received by Mr. Stephen A. Mickson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Mrs. Lily Nkrumah, Registrar; and other senior officials. Discussions at the meeting highlighted shared aspirations for joint academic programmes, faculty and student exchanges, and research projects. Both institutions expressed mutual enthusiasm about forging a strategic alliance.
On March 26, the delegation met authorities at the University of Education, Winneba, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual and other principal officers. UniSey used the opportunity to present its institutional profile, noting that it was founded in 2009 and operates two campuses. It currently offers programmes across faculties such as Arts and Social Development, Computing and Information Systems, and Languages and Communication. Talks with UEW focused on initiating joint research and exchange programmes, particularly in media, communication, and IT. The two sides agreed to draft a Memorandum of Understanding, establish a working group, and seek funding support for future collaborations.
Later the same day, a strategic engagement was held with the University of Cape Coast at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. The meeting was led by UCC Vice Chancellor Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boamong, who described his institution’s expertise in Business, Marine Sciences, Environmental Science, and Fisheries. In response, UniSey showcased its strengths in Business and Sustainable Development, Arts and Social Development, and Computing. Areas of potential collaboration included student mobility, environmental sustainability research, African Erasmus-like programmes, and peace and conflict studies. Both institutions committed to forming a joint committee to finalise a formal agreement and convene a virtual follow-up meeting within three months.
The tour culminated in Kumasi at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where the delegation met Vice Chancellor Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson and other senior administrators. This engagement marked the beginning of the implementation phase of a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier in January 2025 between KNUST and UniSey. The meeting was described as particularly significant in cementing the partnership between the two universities.
Beyond academia, the delegation was treated to a royal cultural reception hosted by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, in Kumasi. The dinner, which brought together members of the King’s cabinet and KNUST staff, celebrated the rich heritage of the Ashanti Kingdom and created an informal platform for strengthening cross-cultural ties.
Reflecting on the visit, both UniSey and its Ghanaian counterparts expressed optimism about the future of their collaboration. The initiative is expected to yield long-term benefits in student development, research innovation, and global academic competitiveness.
