The fire, believed to have started in the early hours of Friday, ravaged property including  textiles and other fabrics con­tained in the shop.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in a shop which had been closed for over a year now and tore into a nearby shop, destroying goods in it.

The President of the Feder­ation of Kejetia Traders, Nana Akwasi Prempeh, said the early in­tervention of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) personnel prevented more shops from being affected.   

“The security agencies patrol the market every night since we got the intelligence that some assailants have planned to set the facility ablaze,” he said.

Again, Mr Prempeh stated that it was unclear the cause of the fire and that the GNFS unit at the market had started investigation into the fire outbreak.

He said the traders had been urged to put off all their electrical gadgets before leaving the market.

This is the fourth time in three weeks that a market fire outbreak has occurred in the Kumasi me­tropolis.

Last Sunday the Kwadaso Wood Market in Kumasi was swept through by a devastating fire destroying numerous prop­erties.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire ravaged the main sawmill and destroyed essential equipment, along with logs of wood.

The sources said the people who rushed there attempted to quench the fire but were over­whelmed by its intensity but there were no casualties reported.
