The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has installed two new abstraction pumps out of the four newly acquired by the company, at the intake point of the Weija Treatment Plant to resolve its supply challenges.
Procured with internally generated funds, the 6.2 million Euros equipment, which would improve and increase water supply within the western part of Accra and parts of the Central Region.
Touring the facility and checking the water supply situation at some residences at Fadama and Kwashiema, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs Lydia Seyram Alhassan, stated the pumping machines came in handy to help reduce the incident of water shortages in these areas.
She noted that with the extra capacity of new pumps, GWL expects water to be flowing on daily basis and not on weekly or monthly basis like what customers had experienced for a period of time now.
“What you have seen is just one part of Greater Accra, that is the western part of Greater Accra, similar thing is happening in the Volta region at the Keta water, which is 71 per cent complete, Wenchi water also about 72 per cent and Takoradi, Techiman water projects about 74 per cent complete.”
The Managing Director of GWL, Dr Clifford Braimah, said the new intakes had increased pumping capacity at a stable level from 120,000 cubic metres to 145,000 cubic metres per day.
Even though, he said two out of the four new pumps had been installed successfully, and hoping to install the rest by the end of the month, however, the two pumps generate 6 million extra gallons of water per day.
“We have increased our pumping capacity and this one at a stable level from 120,000 cubic metres to 145,000 cubic metres, which is an additional 25,000 cubic metres, If this is translated to per capital consumption of the individuals in Accra, assuming 100 litres per person per day, this means that with these two pumps alone, we are adding 250,000 people a day.”
“So when we add the two other pumps, we are expecting that about 420,000 people will be included in the supply chain per day,” he explained.
Dr Braimah noted that the procurement of the new pumps was to expand its supply systems to meet the increasing demands of customers due to the growing population in Accra.
The four smart pumping machines, he outlined, comes with four panels and four monitors that helps in monitoring the temperature of the machines that would help carry out preventative maintenance without any challenge unlike the old machines that had fewer panels controlling the four machines without a separate monitoring system.
The Production Manager, Dr Hadisu Alhassan, indicated that for some time now, the intake of the Weija Treatment Plant had some challenges with their pumps which led to supply challenges in some of Accra which included Dansoman, Korle Bu, Kaneshie, Lapaz, Fadama, Tesano, Achimota, Darkuma, among others.
