Over 300 residents of Teshie and its surrounding areas in the Greater Accra Region have benefitted from a free medical screening organised jointly by the Family Health University College (FHUC) and Family Health Hospital (FHH).
The exercise, which was held in collaboration with the Teshie Traditional Council, formed part of the activities to mark this year’s Homowo festival.
Residents had queued up early in the morning to receive screenings that included tests for malaria, typhoid, diabetes, hypertension, eye and dental care and general health checkups.
Some received medications for various ailments and those with serious conditions were referred to the hospital for further examinations and treatment.
The initiative also raised awareness of managing chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes through glucose level and blood pressure monitoring.
The acting Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr Patience Aniteye, highlighted the importance of such exercises, emphasising that they help identify if one has a particular disease or condition.
She said early detection, followed by treatment and good control of the condition, could result in better treatment outcomes and lower the risk of serious complications.
Dr Aniteye, speaking on behalf of the Founders of the Family Health University College and Family Health Hospital, Prof. E. Y. Kwawukume and Dr Susu Bridget Kwawukume, conveyed their felicitations to the people of Teshie on their Homowo festival.
“The success of the free Homowo Health Screening and counselling services exemplifies the organisation’s ongoing mission to contribute to the improvement of the health of all people through quality health education and efficient healthcare delivery,” she added.
The Medical Coordinator of Family Health Hospital, Dr Rebecca Acquaah Arhin, added that such initiatives by the institution aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Three which seeks to champion good health and well-being, while fostering goodwill and better collaborations within communities.
It also conforms to the core values of the FHUC and the FHH, which seek to provide compassionate healthcare services and foster the well-being of residents within the community.
