The exercise being undertaken by the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASH­MA) include the desilting of all drains along principal streets and the business district.

It also involves the reconstruction of a 300-metre drain at the Ashaiman main station to enable it handle huge flash waters.

This came to light, when the Munici­pal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Albert Boakye Okyere, conducted journalists round some of the sites where work was ongoing, on Wednesday.

These include the Ashaiman round­about, main station, and other parts of the business district in the municipality.

During the working visit, the MCE cautioned traders who had placed their stalls, containers and other shops on wa­ter ways to remove them with immediate effect.

He noted that failure to do so, would compel the assembly to remove them and surcharge the owners.

Mr Okyere explained that the period when traders and residents flouted the as­sembly’s by-laws was a thing of the past, adding wrong doers would be brought to book.

According to him, it was envisaged that there would be heavy rains during the raining season this year, and ASHMA was taking all necessary steps to avoid floods that can affect lives and property.

Mr Okyere further bemoaned the careless manner in which some residents dump their refuge into open drains during downpour, resulting in blockage and flash floods.

It would be recalled that there were floods in some parts of the municipality during the wet season last year.

Some affected areas were New Town, Jericho, China Mall and Old Tulaku, which damaged property. No fatalities were however reported.
