The Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) Business School has trained about 60 business students on how to manage and operate accounting software.
This is part of the school’s efforts to prepare them for the job market.
The training, organised by the Department of Accounting, Banking and Finance of the school, in collaboration with Prymage Consultancy Limited, was also aimed at empowering the students to be entrepreneurs by providing consultancy services.
The students were taught how to make entries, as well as set up the latest version of an accounting software known as Tally.
Empower students
A Senior Lecturer and Head of Department of the Accounting, Banking and Finance Department of the GCTU, Dr Emmanuel Attah Kumah Amponsah, said it was crucial to integrate the practical aspect of accounting into their curriculum since the industry was in demand of people who could solve accounting problems using accounting software.
He said the workshop was focused on training all final-year and level 200 students studying Accounting in all their campuses.
“Every company is going Fintech and if you don't have knowledge of technology, you can't fit in the job market. This is why we are organising the training, where the students will receive certificates after the training,” he said.
He indicated that currently, the Department of Accounting, Banking and Finance was developing new programmes which would be run next year.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Michael Nana Owusu Akomeah, commended the Department of Accounting, Banking and Finance for the initiative and said it would go a long way to help the students.
Skills needed
The Head of Training and Support at Prymage Consultancy Limited, Samuel Anim, reiterated the importance of providing hands-on skills to students and said it was crucial for the current dynamic industry.
“Currently, what is happening is that when the students finish school and they get a job offer, some employers demand that they have knowledge of at least one accounting software. This is why we are empowering them before they finish school.
“One of the objectives of our company is to ensure that before any student leaves school, we would have given them an insight into a minimum of three software which would include Tally, QuickBooks and Sage,” he said.
