DAY 1 – Introduction
This is day 1 of our 5 days training specially design for instructors-people who want to help students online using online courses.
In this lesson, we are going to look at the benefits of online courses and why it is important for you to create an online course as soon as possible.
Why an online course?
A new study found that college tuition and costs are rising more quickly than financial aid. The average cost of tuition and fees at a private institution is $31,231 a year, which has resulted in a 13% increase over just few years.
Unfortunately, it’s showing no signs of slowing down.
Recently, student loan debt has reportedly increased by $77 billion, bringing the United States’ total to a whopping $1.16 trillion. And this is same for other countries.
That’s a lot of money. And it’s a big pill to swallow for young people right out of high school or even adults just trying to keep up with continuing education.
Thankfully, there’s one convenient solution.
This solution lets you learn anytime, anywhere. You can even do it in your own living room.
And it’s inexpensive. So you don’t have to mortgage the next thirty years of your life with student loan debt.
The high price tag of college tuition has motivated people to look for other alternatives. So as a result, the online education industry is expected to grow past $325 billion by 2025.
“The worldwide e-Learning market continues to witness rapid developments which are driving adoption among the academic and business sectors. Robust growth in the online learning market is driven by increasing accessibility and cost-effectiveness of learning and training initiatives.”
Here’s what that means in plain English:
There are courses on every topic you can imagine, spanning math to design and general business that people are willingly signing up for every single day.
What does that mean for you?
Sharing your skills through online courses is one of the best ways to make some major money right now.
I’m going to show you exactly how to do that later in this lesson. But first, let see some of the benefit of creating an online course.
Benefits of online courses
Below you’ll find the list of benefits for tutors and subject experts who are embracing the new technology of online course creation. It’s never been easier.
That way you spread out your risk so you’re less reliant on another area of your business, like consulting services or selling physical products.
2. Help and Inspiring Students. Then, of course, there’s the positive feeling that comes from helping students develop their skills and knowledge and further their careers in the fashion sector and the meaningful experience that comes from knowing you have inspired a student to stretch themselves to become the best they can be.
3. Create Recognition and Build Authority. The positive feeling comes from being recognised as an expert by peers, students and professionals in your field. Having your own online course builds credibility and authority, and lets you create a true brand for yourself. People trust and respect those who teach others, so use that to your advantage!
While your course earns you money all on its own, it also leverages other areas of your business or any new products that you plan to release in the future.
By saying you have taught ‘x’ number of people all over the world, you have instant credibility enabling you to position yourself as a top expert in your field.
4. New Opportunities. In many cases, new opportunities can arise after publishing courses online. For example, speaking engagements, invitations to contribute to other work bodies, being invited to develop online courses within your current place of work etc.
5. You Can Reach More People. You can reach many students through your online courses and reach those who can’t normally access you through normal routes.
If you’re coaching or working with people one on one, the number of people you can help is severely limited by the number of hours in a day.
If you work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, that’s only 160 hours per month that you can potentially help people.
By recording videos or making information available online, you can do the equivalent of thousands of hours of work per month without even needing to do the coaching or teaching!
You basically create a digital copy of yourself and your knowledge, which enables you to reach more people than your physical self could ever dream of.
6. Learning From Others. Teaching = learning, and your new students can contribute valuable insights from their professional and life experiences to your courses’ discussion areas where you too can learn from them.
7. Self-Improvement. Watching yourself on a video can drive self-improvements in communication and presentation skills, improving your face-to-face delivery in the classroom or meetings with peers and co-workers.
8. Test New Concepts. You can use your course as a testbed and launchpad for tools, concepts, projects, methods, etc., that you can then bring into your classroom and workplace. Your online students can give you valuable feedback on these before you launch them live.
9. Collaborate With Others. You can develop some interesting collaborations that would be more difficult or impossible in a traditional environment. For example, co-teaching with faculty from a different university or college or contributing experts from industry.
10. Become An Innovator. You can develop your own skills and knowledge by becoming an innovator. You can play a role in shaping the future of fashion education and ride the wave of change that’s coming rather than be drowned by it.
11. Flexibility. Creating and selling online courses can enable you to live a very flexible schedule.
If you want to work on it 9 to 5 you can. You can also grind for 70 hours per week if you’re trying to create an online course empire for yourself and then retire (or semi-retire) early.
Or you can take a more laid back approach and just work for a few hours each day or just on certain days of the week, making it perfect for stay at home parents, or just about anyone that wants to do more than work in their life!
It’s your business, and you can run it however you want. That leaves room for hobbies or even having another part-time job to earn a steady income during the early stages of setting your course up.
12. Create Geographical Freedom. Having an online course earning you money means you can work from anywhere in the world. All you need to have is an internet connection and a laptop.
You’re not bound to one location like a traditional job. You can keep making and promoting your courses while you’re sitting on a beach in Thailand. In fact plenty of people are doing exactly this as one the best ways to make income as a digital nomad.
An online course also gives you the ability to sell to a global market and have students from countries all over the world. That’s something you’d never be able to do if you were only teaching courses locally within your own city.
13. You Create A Valuable Asset An online course is something you can sell over and over again, without the time limitations of a regular job. Creating a course makes ‘passive income’ a reality, and breaks the link between the number of hours you work and the amount of money you earn.
I put ‘passive income’ in brackets there because the truth is it’s not passive…you’ll still need to support your students, answer questions, do marketing and more…but the point is sales can come in automatically in your sleep and your time input is not directly tied to the number of sales you make.
Since it’s a digital product, there’s no additional cost of making a new copy of your course. As long as there aren’t any technical difficulties, most parts of the process are automated and don’t require ongoing input from you. An online course also has pretty low costs associated with it, with high profit margins around 75% or more.
And because it’s such a profitable product and scalable, an online course (or a series of courses) have the very real possibility of completely replacing your current income stream or job if you get a good marketing system in place.
It’s also an asset in the sense that it has longevity – you can sell the same course for years to come. Sure, you might need to revise or update sections of it, or even the whole thing every few years. But you are making a valuable asset that will pay off over and over again.
14. To Diversify Your Income. Even if you already have a successful business, you might want to add an online course to your offering just to diversify a bit.
That way you spread out your risk so you’re less reliant on another area of your business, like consulting services or selling physical products.
This is exactly what we have done in my mushroom growing business, where education and online courses have become a huge part of what we do alongside growing the mushrooms and making mushroom growing kits for sale.
Conclusion
It is time to get started with your own course.
Most people can’t afford to take on the massive amounts of debt required to go back to college. Many older people also can’t take the time away from their day jobs and families, either.
That’s why online courses are exploding in popularity. They’re the perfect mix of both convenience and affordability.
That means people are already out there, looking day and night for your expertise. They need your help and skills to solve issues in their life or learn how to do something better, more effectively, for cheaper.
They need help, and you can help them. Creating a new online course today can make that all possible.
