The Upper West Region has recorded the Avian Influenza disease also known as Bird Flu.
The region’s first case was recorded in a commercial poultry farm at Tumu in the Sissala East Municipality after samples were taken for testing.
The Municipal Veterinary Officer, Eric Tergu in a statement indicated that the farm has been quarantined and biosecurity at the farm has been strengthened.
“Additional control measures being implemented are; a ban on movement in and out of the farm. Currently. depopulation and disinfection of the farm is underway.”
Veterinary staff in the Municipality have also intensified active and passive surveillance following the outbreak.
As of August 29, the Greater Accra Region led with 28 cases while the Ashanti Region followed with nine cases.
Other regions affected are the Volta, Central, Western, and Western North Regions.
The outbreak has affected some 110,000 birds.
Following the recent outbreak, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture announced a total ban on the importation of poultry and poultry products from neighbouring countries where the disease has been confirmed.
There is also a ban on the movement of poultry and poultry products within and from the affected regions and districts to other parts of the country.
In addition, the Ministry said it has intensified public awareness and sensitisation by Regional Coordinating Councils and District Assemblies, especially in the affected areas.
