The Mfantsiman Girls’ Senior High School, one of the celebrated senior secondary institutions in Ghana, would highlight the role of parents and other stakeholders towards making the Free Senior High School Policy successful, at its 58th Speech and Prize Giving Day, this weekend.
Several educationists have since the introduction of the policy this academic year, suggested that clear roles should be assigned to stakeholders to complement the Government’s efforts in developing all the human resource capacity of Ghanaians to play their roles effectively in nation building.
Ms Josephine Nkrumah, the Chairperson of the National Commission on Civic Education, would address the issue at the ceremony, which would be chaired by Communications Minister, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, with Justice Mrs Irene C. Larbi, a Justice at the Court of Appeal, as the Guest of Honour, on Saturday, March, 25.
All the three eminent personalities received their secondary education from the citadel of holistic learning and source of discipline, established in 1960, by Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s First President, at Saltpond in the Central Region, to help raise multitalented women of substance to contribute their quota to every facet of national development.
Thus many of old students are professionals who continue to serve in public life, as well as the corporate, business, media and other competitive arenas in Ghana and beyond. Second Lady Samira Bawumia and her predecessor, Mrs Matilda Amissah-Arthur both received their education at the “Mansite”, as is affectionately called by students from the counterpart male schools in the Central Region.
The School has a tradition of having the year- group, which reaches 25 years after completion, hosting the annual speech and prize giving day.
However, since there is a back-log of year-groups to have their turns, some year-groups have collaborated to host the Day.
It is in line with this arrangement, that the 1987/89 and 1993/95 year groups, both at home and abroad, have effectively collaborated to host this year’s event.
With levies, special contributions and other fund-raising activities, they have pooled resources to undertake developmental projects to give the school a face-lift and enhance effective teaching and learning.
The 1987/89-year group has sponsored the installation of a 4.8kWp Hybrid Solar PV power generating system at GHS48,000 on one of the classroom blocks.
The entire school block is fully powered by solar energy to help lift the burden of the sky-rocketing electricity bills and the negative effects of intermittent power fluctuations off the shoulders of the Management of the School to ensure effective academic activities in the night.
The group has also sponsored some solar-powered street lights to facilitate safe movement in and around the compound at night.
These projects, with those sponsored by the 199/95 Year-Groups, would be commissioned at the weekend.
The Speech Day would be preceded by a Homecoming of old students' activity on Friday, March 23, and professional counselling and career guidance sessions for the students.
There will be entertainment for Saturday night and a thanksgiving service on Sunday.
