The Head of the Management Information Systems (MIS) of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), ‘Dr’ Caleb Afaglo, has been dismissed for gaining employment through the use of fake academic certificates.
A statement issued in Accra on Wednesday by the acting Corporate Affairs Manager of SSNIT, Ms Victoria Abaidoo, said “the evidence made available to the Trust indicates that the university degrees presented by Dr Afaglo to secure his employment at the Trust are fake.”
It indicated that Afaglo, who is currently on interdiction “has been relieved of his post with immediate effect.”
According to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), its investigation revealed that ‘Dr’ Afaglo did not have a doctorate degree as he claimed. Neither did he possess a master’s or first degree.
‘Dr’ Afaglo was employed in 2015 after phases one and two of the Operational Business Suite (OBS) of SSNIT had been implemented.
Prior to his appointment at SSNIT, Dr Afaglo had worked as an IT consultant for the Trust, National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), and at MTN Ghana and Action Chapel International as the Data Services Supervising Engineer.
He had also served as the head of IT Department at SIMNET GHANA and Dominion University.
OBS Contract
The statement gave the assurance that the Trust was collaborating with the EOCO to “ensure that those suspected of breaches of the law in respect of the OBS contract were dealt with in accordance with the laws of the land.”
The Trust said it expected persons associated with the IT OBS contract, which cost $72 million, “to be released in future.”
According to the statement, the Board and Management of SSNIT would publish the findings of the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as early as promised.
Promise to clean up
It assured the public that the Trust was positioning itself to serve the interest of its stakeholders.
“The Board and Management of SSNIT wish to assure our stakeholders – contributors, pensioners, employers, organised labour and the general public that we will work tirelessly to improve and add value to the fortunes of SSNIT,” the statement added.
Managing Director
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the SSNIT, Dr John Ofori, told the Daily Graphic in an interview that ‘Dr’ Afaglo was dismissed after due process was followed per the terms of conditions of service for management staff, reports Mabel Aku Baneseh.
He said ‘Dr’ Afaglo appeared before a committee set up by the SSNIT Board in the presence of his lawyers.
Dr Ofori said the committee comprised himself, three other board members, a deputy director-general of SSNIT and a representative of the Human Resource Department of the Trust.
“We followed all the steps set out in his conditions of service before dismissing him,” Dr Ofori told the Daily Graphic.
The SSNIT boss assured the public that all was being done to protect the interest of contributors.
