The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Samuel Sarpong, has reminded the people about the need to keep the environment clean in the wake of cholera outbreak in some parts of the country to stop the spread of the disease.
He said it was important to adhere to good sanitary practices and to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of waste.
Mr Sarpong said this when he joined residents of Asokwa New Town in Kumasi to clean the community.
The people removed silt and polythene bags from gutters, cleared weeds and swept the streets.
He appealed to residents to be alert and said the fact that Kumasi had not yet recorded any incidence of cholera should not make anybody complacent.
The Metropolitan Assembly had stepped up public education to sensitize the residents on the causes and prevention of cholera and other diseases like malaria and typhoid fever.
Mr Sarpong said the assembly was at the same time working hard to ensure efficient management of waste in the metropolis.
Mr John Obimpeh, Assembly Member for Asokwa New Town, said anyone found dumping waste at unapproved places would be prosecuted.
He thanked the assembly for improving the street lighting system of the area.
