Mr Maxwell Awuku, Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited, has commended drivers of the
Company for recording fewer accidents in recent times.
He said road accidents involving Metro Mass buses had reduced drastically since last year and urged the drivers to uphold high professional standards and project the MMT as a reliable and safe means of road transportation.
Mr Awuku said this in an interview with the GNA at the official opening of Aflao/Denu route of MMT.
He attributed the fewer accidents recorded by the MMT in 2010 and January 2011 to early morning pep-talks given to drivers and their commitment to the ideals of ensuring safe, comfortable and
reliable road transport.
Mr Awuku said the over 1,111 buses deployed all over the country had carried 34 million commuters nationwide in 2010 and employed 3,000 Ghanaians as drivers, conductors and managers among others.
He said the Company would add 5,000 new buses to its fleet this year in an effort to improve public transportation and called for support from all to sustain the MMT.
Mr Samuel Ablakwa Okudzeto, Deputy Minister of Information, expressed worry over the spate of carnage on the roads and urged drivers to be extra cautious and bring dignity into road transport.
Mr Alex Segbefia, the Deputy Chief of Staff, said the government understood the needs of the people and was doing all within its means to satisfy those needs with the support of the citizenry.
