B C Gupta, Secretary in the Department of Food and Public Distribution, has been elected as vice-chairman of the International Sugar Council for the year 2011.
At the 38th Session of the council held here, Tanzania was elected as its Chair. India is a member of the International Sugar Organisation since 1993 which has a membership of 85 countries.
India is the largest consumer of sugar in the world with its demand estimated at 23.5 million metric tonne.
The Council deeply appreciated India's cooperative role as a major player in sugar sector. India will host meeting of the Council in 2012.
