The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council
(RCC) in collaboration with Osu Youth Empowerment (OYE), a youth club, on Saturday embarked on a clean-up exercise at Klottey Lagoon in the Osu Alata Electoral Area.
The exercise was aimed at sensitizing the people in the community on the essence to keep the lagoon clean and also to make people aware of
diseases related to filth especially malaria and cholera, which have become a threat to society.
Mr Aziz Afutu Kotei, Assemblyman for Osu Alata Electoral Area, said the exercise was also to make the inhabitants environmentally conscious, which is a priority to healthy living.
He said the community has a moral responsibility to change their attitude of indiscriminate disposal of refuse into the lagoon.
"We should not think because people are employed to be doing the cleaning we can dispose refuse anywhere," he said.
He said huge resources needed to develop schools and other public projects, were used to make the city clean because people had refused to be educated on sanitation.
"If we use all our resources for the collection of rubbish how can we go ahead in development," he asked.
Mr Kotei was not happy with the collection of refuse by the Jakora Ventures, adding the company had not provided any rubbish container to the
community since it was awarded the contract in September this year.
He called on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to abrogate the contract with Jakora to re-award it to a more efficient company.
He urged the people in the community to ensure good sanitation practices around the lagoon to help fight malaria and other diseases.
