Two out of six children crossing the 30-metre wide River Ochi in a canoe from Enyan Amoanda to Assin Ochiso for Muslim worship last Friday, November 26, got drowned at 12:30 pm.
The two sibblings, Yaw Amoanu, 6, and Kojo Essuon, 3 years, have since been buried after post-mortem examination performed at the Breman Asikuma Catholic Hospital in the Central Region.
The District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Tay, said the six children were crossing the river in a small canoe under the guidance of a 14-year-old girl, Abiba who lost control of the vessel as a result of the swift current of the river, causing the canoe to capsize.
He said a search party managed to retrieve the dead bodies the following day for Muslim burial.
ASP Tay cautioned parents and elders in the area to discourage children from such trips and to ensure that canoes were handled by experienced adults instead of children below 18 years.
