The construction industry in Britain needs a massive overhaul in order to keep pace with the country's low-carbon agenda, a government report said.
The British government tasked the Innovation and Growth Team with finding ways for the construction industry to change the way it does business in a new energy environment.
The IGT in its findings said the construction industry has made some steps toward sustainability but still has a long way to go to conform to a target to cut the carbon account in 2050 to at least 80 percent of the levels from
1990.
The report found that scale of reforms needed in the construction industry was considerable, but creating a low-carbon sector would bring employment and economic benefits to the United Kingdom.
Paul Morrell, who led the IGT study for the British government, said the findings were something of a mixed blessing in terms of meeting the low-carbon agenda.
"It will require radical change to the way we do business as well as government action to meet the scale of the challenge," he cautioned in a
statement. "There are no easy answers."
