The Member of Parliament (MP) for Obuasi, Mr
Edward M. Ennin, has so far donated over 3,000 dual and mono desks to a number of public basic schools in the municipality to help address shortage of furniture in the schools due to over-enrolment.
At a ceremony at Obuasi to hand over 500 of the new desks valued at GH�30,000 to the Education Directorate for distribution to 18 basic schools and Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Mr Ennin reiterated his commitment
to support educational development in the municipality.
"Since the inception of the Capitation Grant and the school feeding programme, I foresaw over-population in the schools, hence the supply of these furniture to complement government's efforts.
Mr Ennin said the library project he initiated two years ago was one of the major moves to help improve education in the municipality. "It is a computer laboratory and a library which would be inaugurated during the
first quarter of next year for public use."
The MP added that through his nstrumentality, over 3,000 students have
benefited from that of the government and his personal scholarship schemes.
Mr Ennin said the free vacation classes he introduced for students in the municipality over the years, as well as free exercise books, had
contributed greatly to improve academic performance in the respective schools.
On his part, the Municipal Director of Education, Mr Johnny Owusu-Boadi noted that the gesture would help to enhance school enrolment and improve teaching and learning outcomes in the beneficiary schools.
He said Obuasi had been first in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) nationwide over the years, adding that this year too "we have been first with 96.93 percent."
Mr Owusu-Boadi said a number of strategies including teacher motivation had been put in place to help attain 100 per cent in 2011, and appealed to the MP to support the 2010 best teacher/worker award ceremony to be organised early next year.
