The Tree for the Future, a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in the United States has planted 150 trees at New Abossey Okai Primary and Junior High Schools at Mataheko.
The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology donated the trees while the NGO provided the tools for the tree planting exercise.
The exercise, which witnessed the participation of about 500 school children and their teachers, was aimed at inculcating in the children the sense of environmental protection.
It was also intended at preserving the environment and equipping the younger generation to be environmentally conscious.
Addressing the children, Mr Lovans Owusu Takyi, Coordinator of Trees for the Future, Ghana, stressed the importance of school gardening and tree planting to enhance agricultural and environmental education in schools.
He said absence of trees on school compounds had done more harm than good as most school buildings had been destroyed by storm.
He said planting multi-purpose fast growing trees served as wind-breaks, reduced noise from the communities, beautified the school compound and provided a serene environment for effective teaching and learning.
Mr Owusu Takyi called for the reintroduction of agricultural and environmental studies as a compulsory course in both basic and Senior High
Schools to encourage the youth into agriculture to enhance food security.
Miss Mercy Genevieve Dzitrie, Headmistress of both Primary and JHS, expressed appreciation to the NGO and the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology for coming up with the initiative.
She gave the assurance that the trees planted would be well catered for to benefit the schools as well as the community.
