A well built unidentified man was on Saturday evening shot dead in a shoot-out between suspected robbers and the personnel of a Joint Police and Military Patrol Team at Zongo Laka, a suburb of Ashaiman.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Augustine Gyening, Tema Regional Police Commander, briefing the media on Monday said, the deceased was the driver in-charge of the unregistered white Nissan Frontier double cabin pick-up the suspected robbers were using.
ACP Gyening added that the corpse of the unidentified man has been deposited at the Police Hospital Morgue.
He said at about 21:30 hours on Saturday, the Patrol Team spotted the unregistered pick-up at Ashaiman and signaled the driver to stop.
He said instead of stopping, the driver reversed at top speed with the intention to escape, but ran into a taxi, injuring one of its (taxi) occupants.
The Commander said to avoid being arrested, the occupants of the pick-up started firing at the Team, leading to a response from the Patrol
Team.
He said the other two occupants of the pick-up managed to escape, as the Team had to be cautious to avoid injuring innocent people who were at the scene.
ACP Gyening appealed to the public to assist the Police to find the owners of the vehicle and also to arrest the two, who were now at large.
In another development, six young men were on Sunday dawn arrested at Prampram for allegedly blocking the road and attempting to rob a taxi
driver.
The six included two brothers, Alex Kwame Inkoom and Kwesi Inkoom, who claimed they were not twins and had the same biological mother, but both of them were aged 16 years.
The others are Kwabena Acheampong, 22, Kwame Danso, 16, Kojo Nkrumah, 22, and Ebenezer Appiah, 21.
ACP Gyening stated that the six where arrested at about 00:15 hours on Sunday when the Patrol Team spotted their road blockade at Prampram, on the Tema-Aflao road.
He added that the six, who were holding knives and sticks had deflated two of the tyres of the taxi, and were about to attack the driver when the Team reached the scene.
