Barima Akwasi Amankwaah, National Programme Officer of the Ghana Non Governmental Organizations Coalition on the Rights of the Child (GNCRC) - Children's Club, has underlined the need for active involvement of children in decisions affecting their growth and development.
He said this would help them to have better understanding and develop a sense of ownership for these decisions.
Barima Amankwaah was speaking at the inauguration of a GNCRC - Children's Club at the Amankwatia Junior High School in Kumasi.
He said it was part of the national drive to plant Children's Clubs in all the regions to promote the rights of the Ghanaian child.
United Nations (UN) Convention on the rights of the child insists on participation of children in all activities which involve them.
Barima Amankwaah said the goal was to safeguard the rights of children, help them to be disciplined and more alive to their responsibilities.
The clubs, additionally, would provide the platform for them to deliberate on issues bordering on their common good and build leadership skills, he said.
Ms Joyce Otenamoa Boateng, Headmistress of the school, welcomed the initiative and appealed for support by providing more teaching and learning materials to the school.
She urged the media to give the needed publicity to child rights issues.
The students, during an open forum, appealed to the government to assist them with computers to enable them to upgrade their knowledge and skills in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
