Tragedy hit Wamanafo, in the Dormaa East District of Brong Ahafo, on Monday, when two young men got drowned in the Supre stream, at the outskirts of the town.
Police Chief Inspector A.A. Douduo told the GNA at Wamanafo that, a 32 year old carpenter, Kwadwo Twumasi, got drowned when he attempted to rescue one Peprah Aikins, 22, a former student of Sunyani Senior High School from being carried away by the strong current of the stream.
Inspector Douduo said the police received a distress call soon after the incident but when they went to the scene they could not locate them.
He said the bodies of the two were however found floating in the steam the following morning, and that the corpses have been retrieved and deposited at the Dormaa Presbyterian hospital mortuary for autopsy.
According to the police officer, eyewitnesses told them that they heard someone screaming for help from the direction of the stream and when they got there; they found Aikins battling with the fast running stream.
Chief Inspector Aikins said the eyewitnesses, who were mostly
women with no swimming skills, raised the alarm, which attracted some young men, including Twumasi, who offered to brave the strong current to rescue Aikins.
He was also immediately swept away by the strong currents of the stream.
