The Accra Regional Police Command on Tuesday spelt out precautionary measures to curb the high rate of car snatching and the use of unregistered motor bikes to commit crimes in the Accra Metropolis.
"Much as the Police Service is facing these criminals boot-for-boot, we deem it fit to
share with the general public, especially drivers and car owners, some tips to combat car snatching and the use of unregistered motor bikes to commit crimes," a statement issued in Accra by Mr Zenge Cyprian, Assistant Superintendent of Police at the Public Affairs Directorate of Accra Regional Police Command, said.
The statement cautioned drivers not to use vehicles with Trade Number plate, especially at night, and to desist from driving to outlandish areas at night.
"Drivers must be careful of persons who hire their taxi cabs, for example, from Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Kokroite, and midway into the journey, the occupants ask you the driver to branch for a friend to board the vehicle, and/or to pick something up.
"Please do not give in but drive to the nearest Police Station or to a place where there are people for help."
The statement urged owners of vehicles to write down the chassis numbers of their vehicles, because car snatchers often removed the number plates of vehicles as soon as they were stolen.
The Police urged commercial vehicle drivers to be careful of passengers who boarded their cars and engaged in series of telephone calls.
"When suspicious of a passenger on board, drivers should drive to the nearest Police
Station or Police snap check point for help.
"When a passenger on board asks you to stop at a particular location and the place is not within human settlement or on a bush road, please do not stop."
The public is also advised to be suspicious of unregistered motor bikes since criminals employed their services to monitor the movement of people to their houses to steal their valuable items.
It called on the public to volunteer information about criminals and their activities
to the Police for prompt action on emergency number 030 2773906.
