Government on Thursday donated unspecified amount of money to victims of the Sege-Road Metro Mass Transit (MMT) accident, to cover their medical expenses.
Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a Deputy Minister of Information, on behalf of government, presented the cash donation to six of the victims, who were still on admission at the Accident Unit and Surgical Department of the
Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, in Accra.
They have been receiving treatment for various degree of injury suffered during the August 16, 2010 accident, which claimed nearly 20 lives.
The accident occurred around 0400hrs after an Accra-bound MMT bus, which they were travelling on, ran into a stationed articulated truck at Sege in the Dangbe East District of the Greater Accra Region.
Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa said that the donation demonstrated government's concern for the victims.
He said government had been in constant touch with hospital authorities since the incident occurred to monitor the progress of the victims and expressed satisfaction at the determination and commitment of staff of both
units at treating the victims.
Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa said that apart from personally visiting the victims, it was also to enable him to come to terms with logistical needs of the hospital.
He assured hospital authorities that Government would continue to work to provide adequate logistical needs of the hospital to ensure effective healthcare delivery for the people.
Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa asked drivers to be careful on the roads and warned that the Police would strictly enforce road traffic regulations and severely punish offenders.
Ms Grace Sakoe, Deputy Director of Nursing Services in-charge of Trauma (accident) Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, who led the Deputy
Minister to visit the victims, appealed to Government to continue with efforts to provide more logistics to the hospital especially the Trauma Unit.
She said that some of the victims had been treated and discharged and gave the assurance that the remaining six were on stable condition and would soon be discharged.
The victims thanked Government for the donation and taking steps to ensure their recovery.
