A 26-year-old Ph D student from south Indian state Andhra Pradesh has drowned in a swimming accident at Burlington City in Vermont.
Sasi Sekhar Kunta from Vijayawada drowned when he and his friends jumped off the Burlington bike-path footbridge in to Winooski river on June 5, the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) said in a statement.
Burlington Fire department, Colchester Technical Rescue, the US Coast Guard and bystanders conducted the search but couldn't find him since it was already dark and the visibility was very poor, TANA said.
The team continued the search and finally found the body next day from near the bridge.
Burlington Police detectives are investigating the case and don't suspect any foul play.
Jayaram Komati, TANA president and Prasad Thotakura, executive vice-president expressed their shock and dismay in losing an "young and bright student in a freak accident".
