A film highlighting British Government's support for the 1GOAL Campaign for Education, to provide a school textbook per subject for every child was
launched in Accra on Thursday.
It was sponsored by UK Department for International Development (DFID).
The campaign is seizing the power of football to ensure education for all is a lasting impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and bringing together footballers, fans, charities, cooperation and individuals to lobby and achieve the ambitious aim of education for everyone.
In the film, President John Evans Atta Mills pledged support for the campaign and government's
commitment to education as one of the top priorities.
It is under the theme: "1GOAL, 1 CHILD, 1Textbook".
Mr. Alex Tettey-Enyo, Minister of Education, noted that education was the key to self, community and national development.
He said Ghana led the way in allocating over 30 per cent of the national budget to education and it was a real achievement that 600,000 children were attending school than five years ago.
Mr Tettey-Enyo said that under the capitation grant, each child was provided GH�4.50 in each school to cover school fees parents usually paid and government was committed to the provision free uniforms for children from vulnerable families.
Dr. Nicholas Westcott, British High Commissioner to Ghana, pledged support for the campaign for children around the world to receive education.
He urged Ghana Government to "bang the drums loudly for education at the summit in South Africa
on July 7".
Under the campaign over eight million supporters have been recruited in the run up to the World Cup Tournament through a mass sign up campaign to achieve a school place for 72
million children out of school globally.
Former Black Stars striker Yaw Preko said it was outrageous that 35 million African children missed out on basic primary education and tackling that would be an incredible achievement.
He called on every Ghanaian child to have free quality education in well equipped schools.
Anthony Baffoe, Stephen Appiah, Michael Essien, Richard Kingson, John Paintsil, Asamoah Gyan, Andre' Ayew, Haminu Dramani have also join the campaign.
