A-14 member Board of Governors for the Begoro Senior High School (SHS), in the Fanteakwa District was inaugurated on Thursday with a challenge to members to improve on discipline on campus.
Mrs Rene O. Boakye-Boaten, Eastern Regional Director of Education, reminded members of the board that they have been appointed at a time when numerous challenges such as the use of mobile phones by students, strain teacher- student relationship, and visits by parents at odd hours and inadequate infrastructure among other things are confronting some schools.
She therefore tasked them to address the issues and to make academic achievement in the school a priority.
Mrs Boakye-Boaten advised members to study the constitution of the board carefully to avoid a situation where they may be seen to be
encroaching upon the legitimate functions of the headmaster in the discharge of their duties.
She advised the students to plan and to manage their time well to enable them to excel in their studies.
Mrs Boakye-Boaten called for co-operation among the board members, staff, students and the local community to ensure that peace prevails in the school.
Mr Ebenezer Oko Charway, Headmaster of the school, said the school, which was established in 1972 with 70 students and six teachers now has a student population of 1,675, made up of 773 boys and 902 girls and a teaching staff of 81 and a non-teaching staff of 85.
He commended the out-going board members for their commitment towards the growth of the school.
Mr Charway said a major challenge facing the school was lack of infrastructure.
He said in view of the anticipated increase in student population from next academic year, there would be the need for the provision of a 24-unit classroom block, a big multi-purpose assembly/dinning hall, additional furniture for classrooms, dormitories, dinning hall and laboratories.
