Newmont Golden Ridge Limited and Birim Wood Complex Limited, have supported the medical authorities of Akim Oda Government Hospital to renovate the Female Ward of the medical facility.
The 34-bed capacity ward comprised a surgical and medical unit, sterilising, sluice, nurses' room, side ward, washroom and pantry.
Speaking at the inauguration of the project at Akim Oda in the Birim Central Municipality, a member of the Council of State, Osabarima Owusu
Gyamedu III expressed concern about the growing disrespect by some contractors for the ethics of their profession.
He said some of them collect contract sums and bolt away with it, thereby denying the public the use of such projects.
Osabarima Gyamedu who chaired the function called on building inspectors to ensure strict compliance with the Municipal Assembly's
building regulations.
He called on the Assembly to endeavour to find solutions to the myriad of problems bedevilling contractors and the execution of shoddy contracts.
Osabarima Gyamedu commended Newmont and Birim wood Complex for their continued support for the socio-economic advancement of communities in Akim Kotoku.
Dr Kobena Awotwe Wiredu, Medical superintendent of the Hospital said the facility which was built in 1927 to serve as a District Hospital is currently serving a population of more than 300,000 from 138 communities.
He said problems facing the hospital include delays in the payment of National Health Insurance claims owed by the National health Insurance Authority.
"The hospital would be grateful if other corporate bodies would emulate the example of Newmont and Birim Wood Complex to help us out of these problems," he said.
Mr Joe Mensah, a member of the management of Birim Wood Complex and the Chairman of the Interim Management Committee of the hospital said his company undertook the painting of the ward to complement the efforts of Newmont.
In a speech read on his behalf, Eastern Regional Manager of Newmont, Dr Helen MacDonald, said the company's Sustainable Community Development Agenda was aimed at promoting effective partnering with institutions, government agencies and project beneficiaries, using the Public Private Partnership Approach.
"In pursuit of this agenda, Newmont has collaborated with the Akim Oda Government Hospital and the Birim Wood Complex to renovate the female word of the hospital," he said.
