Seventeen drivers were on Tuesday sentenced to fines ranging between GH¢120.00 and GH¢300.00 by a Kumasi Circuit Court for various traffic offences.
These included fake and expired driver licenses, failure to carry warning triangles and dysfunctional fire extinguishers as well as worn out tyres.
They all pleaded guilty and would serve jail terms from two up to six months if they did not pay the money.
Police Chief Inspector Joseph Kwabena Asamoah told the Court presided over by Mr Justice D.W.P. Amedior that their arrest followed a special joint operation by the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Union (MTTU), Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and Road Safety Commission.
This, he said, formed part of efforts to clamp down on indiscipline and enforce road traffic regulations.
The Court ordered that until the drivers and owners of the vehicles fixed the problems and presented receipts covering the expenses, the
vehicles should remain impounded by the police.
