Mrs. Lucy Awuni, Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, on Wednesday said government was developing a three-year strategic plan tailored towards youth empowerment and employment.
She expressed concern about the lack of technical expertise and entrepreneurship skills in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions.
Mrs. Awini was speaking at the launching of the Bolgatanga Polytechnic Students' Representative Council (SRC) Week on the theme: "Technology and Entrepreneurship Development for Economic Growth,", at Sunburungu near Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
She noted that there is the need for the youth to be trained and equipped with the expertise and the ability to use their ingenuity to become self-employed rather than seeking to be employed by government or non-governmental agencies.
Mrs. Awini disclosed that a National Youth Bill had been drafted and would be submitted to Cabinet and subsequently to Parliament to be passed into a National Youth Law.
She said the various youth leadership and skills training institutes would be enhanced and strengthened.
The Vice Rector of the polytechnic, Mr. John Bosco Azigwe noted that the theme for the week, was appropriate because the promotion of entrepreneurship is a revolution that can resolve the numerous challenges facing the country.
He urged the students to see the school as an agent contributing to national development through the training of human resource.
The SRC President, Mr. Mathew Abugbilla claimed that polytechnic certificates are not recognised on the job market as compared to those offered by the universities.
