Afrikids Ghana, a child rights non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Bolgatanga, has received 100,000 dollars as an award for the 2009 education category of the Star Impact Award.
The Star Impact Award is an annual award instituted to support organizations committed to achieving excellence in the provision of services
in health, education and protection to the disadvantaged children.
The Star Impact Award is instituted by the Foundation Stars based in United Kingdom made up of a group of business tycoons who have the zeal in supporting organizations who work in education, health and child protection.
Speaking at a press conference at Bolgatanga to outdoor the Star Impact Award, the Executive Director of Afrikids Ghana, Mr. Nicholas Kumah,
said his outfit, which was established in 2002, had excelled in not only education but in health and child protection.
He said Afrikids Ghana has been providing basic education and primary healthcare and vocational training which have yielded positive impacts on
the lives of the beneficiaries and their families as well as empowered communities.
Mr. Kumah cited the establishment of children home and school as well as a medical centre in the region as some of the achievement of the NGO and said it was through these commitments that made his outfit to win the award.
He said the amount would be used on Child Rights Education and community collaboration to reduce the spread of child labour in gold mining areas in the region and to provide Information Communication Technology (ICT) for children, teachers and staff.
It would also provide a model education for children in Zuarungu.
He said it was the dream of Afrikids Ghana to become self reliant by 2018 instead of relying on its donor, Afrikids UK.
