Mr John Nyehe, Tema Metro Examinations Co-ordinator of the Ghana Education Service, on Monday disclosed that a total of 11,256 candidates within the Metropolis, were writing this year's Basic Education Certification Education (BECE) examinations, which started yesterday.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Tema, Mr. Nyehe said of the total number candidates, 5,483 are boys, while as many as 5,773
are girls, from public and private schools in the Metropolis.
Mr. Charles Henyo, Senior Assistant Registrar of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), explained that sensitization workshops had been
organised for candidates as well as invigilators, to educate them on the dos and don'ts of the examination.
He cautioned that anyone caught indulging in examination malpractices would have his or her paper cancelled, adding that, the cancellation of a
candidate's entire results meant he or she would be banned from taking any of the council's examinations for not less than two years, depending on the offence.
"Supervisors and invigilators found guilty of this offence would be prosecuted," he said.
Mr. Henyo further explained that the WAEC Depot, where question papers were kept had been fortified with a 24-hour armed police guard, to ensure that there was no leakage of the question papers.
He said that there were WAEC officers going round and inspecting the various centres; to make sure things were properly done.
Mr. Henyo was optimistic that this year's BECE examinations would be conducted in a smooth and stress-free manner for candidates, invigilators,
and supervisors.
