The Ghana National Fire Service(GNFS)has embarked on a public education programme to sensitize people in the Upper East Region, on the safe use of fire, prevention and management of adverse fire related occasions.
Addressing a crowd of public and civil servants on the Ghana News Agency premises in Bolgatanga on Thursday, Station Officer Issifu Musah called for the creation of extra fire exits in houses, both private and public and the availability of fire extinguishers to fight small fires.
Mr. Musah asked all factory or corporate environments to have adequate fire prevention equipment such as fire alarm, extinguishers and water hose.
He said the first action to take incase of fire was to run out the building or enclosure and then have a roll call of all who were in the
building in order to know those trapped.
Assistant Group Fire Officer Janet Alogre took the participants through the use of the fire extinguisher.
Ms. Alogre noted that gas was an active fire ingredient and that there was the need to always put cylinders outside when in use adding, gases heat up beyond normal temperature and could make matters worse during fire outbreak.
