A motor mechanic was on Thursday sentenced to six months imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court for causing harm to a police officer and tearing his uniform.
Theophilus Quarcoe, who was riding on an unregistered motor bike, was arrested by General Constable (G/C) Joseph Lot Mensah at Korle Bu.
Quarcoe pleaded guilty to causing unlawful harm and damage, and the court presided over by Mr. C.A Wilson convicted him on his plea.
The court cautioned the public against assaulting public officers and police officers in the course of duty.
Police Chief Inspector Peter Benneh, told the court that there had been frequent snatching of bags, mobile phones and other related crimes by riders of unregistered motor bikes in and
around the Korle Bu Main Bus stop and its surroundings.
He said on January 29, 2009, at 7:00 am, policemen including G/C Mensah were deployed at the Korle Bu vicinity to arrest riders with unregistered motor bikes.
Chief Insp Benneh said at about 7:40 am, Quarcoe was spotted with an unregistered motor bike at the Korle Bu main bus stop.
G/C Mensah on reaching there asked Quarcoe to ride his motor bike to the police station.
Prosecution said G/C Mensah held the carrier of the motor bike but Quarcoe sped off thereby dragging the officer on the road at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Traffic lights.
Chief Insp. Benneh said police officers on duty however, managed to rescue G/C Mensah but Quarcoe escaped.
On May 2009, Quarcoe was arrested to the Korle Bu police station in connection with another offence.
