The Asante-Mampong Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Daniel Ohyeamang, has warned against arbitrary increases in transport fares by commercial drivers and asked them to revert to fares they were taking prior to the new road tolls.
Drivers plying the Mampong-Kumasi route have raised their fare to GH¢ 1.50 from GH¢ 1.40 and this, the MCE said is unacceptable and unjustified.
Mr Ohyeamang asked that the transport operators dialogued with the appropriate authorities to find a way out of the confusion generated by the new rates.
Travellers from Mampong to Kumasi and Ejura on Wednesday got stranded as the drivers refused to operate in protest at the new tolls.
Meanwhile, the Vice-President of the Asante-Mampong branch of the Progressive Transport Society, Mr Samuel Owusu Frimpong, has called for a review of the tolls.
He said even though they recognize that taxes and road levies are critical to the growth of the national economy, these must not worsen the situation of tax-payers.
The new tolls must either be reduced or should be paid only once in a day and not per every trip.
Mr Frimpong said the upward adjustment of levies was ruining their business.
