Netflix, like most streaming services, gives with one hand and takes away with the other. The platform adds dozens of movies to its library each month, but at the same time, it also removes plenty of old favorites to make room for all the new arrivals (or, to be more accurate, it removes existing content due to the expiration of various content licensing deals).

At the end of July 2026, dozens of movies will wave goodbye to Netflix, giving you just shy of two weeks to stream them before they (at least temporarily) vanish from the platform. With not much time and an almost overwhelming amount of choice, I've selected three essential Netflix movies that you should stream now, while you still have the chance.

Below you'll find my top picks, and also the complete list of titles that will be removed on August 1, 2026. These are all the movies set to leave the Netflix library very soon.

'Atonement' (2007)

"Atonement" is a heartbreaking romantic drama. Calling it a tear-jerking tragedy is selling it short. Based on Ian McEwan's 2001 novel, it stars James McAvoy and Keira Knightley as a pair of young lovers whose blossoming romance is ripped apart by a lie that spirals out of control. Directed by Joe Wright, who has form for helming period romances including "Anna Karenina," this 2007 movie is a tough watch, but it's very powerful.

Openning in the 1930s, Cecilia Tallis (Knightley) is the oldest daughter of a wealthy English aristocratic family, and Robbie Turner (McAvoy) is the son of the Tallis' housekeeper. They begin a passionate affair after years of stolen glances. Unbeknownst to the couple, Cecilia's younger sister, Briony, who is infatuated with Robbie, catches them in the act and spins a lie that Robbie is a sexual deviant and a rapist. This false accusation ultimately has grave consequences for Robbie, Cecilia, and even Briony herself.

'Hacksaw Ridge' (2016)

"Hacksaw Ridge" is a different kind of biographical war movie that explores conflict on the front line from the perspective of Desmond Doss, an American combat medic who became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Andrew Garfield plays Doss and delivers an Oscar-nominated performance. The movie proves that wartime heroes come in many forms, and even without a weapon in hand, Doss displays true bravery.

After a childhood incident in which a young Desmond Doss nearly kills his brother while roughhousing, he becomes committed to the commandment "thou shalt not kill." Even as the U.S. enters WWII in the wake of Pearl Harbor, he refuses to break from his position, but he's not willing to stand on the sidelines of the conflict. He joins the army as a combat medic, putting his own life at grave risk to assist and save as many soldiers as possible. "Hacksaw Ridge" celebrates his remarkable story.

'Locke' (2013)

"Locke's" elevator pitch might not sound that appealing at first. It's a single-location flick that takes place entirely within a car speeding down the highway (or motorway; it is set in Britain), with its titular protagonist the only character who appears on screen; the rest are voice-only, communicating with Locke via speakerphone. And yet, even with its restrictive setup, it's one of the 2010s most riveting psychological thrillers, thanks in large part to the work of Tom Hardy in the central role.

Locke's reason for traveling through the night is to be there at the birth of his child. The wrinkle is that this baby was conceived during an extramarital one-night stand, and is about to be delivered on the eve of the biggest moment in Locke's career. As Locke makes his way from Birmingham to London, both his personal and professional life unravel.
