Ghanaian singer and songwriter Rama Blak has described her nomination in the Record of the Year category at this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) as a significant boost to her growing music career.

The young Highlife artiste secured the nomination with her song Kwame Macho, a live-recorded piece that blends authentic palmwine music with socially conscious storytelling. Competing alongside her in the category are Samini featuring Soweto Mass Choir (Chaana), Akoma (Asiama), Enam (Afa), Soul Winners featuring Joe Mettle (For My Good), and Kwame Kwabena (Enso Nyame Y3).

Speaking on the recognition, Rama Blak expressed excitement about being acknowledged among some of the industry’s notable names, noting that the nomination affirms her commitment to promoting indigenous Ghanaian sounds.

“This recognition means a lot to me. It shows that the work I’m putting into preserving our authentic Highlife sound and telling real stories is being seen and appreciated,” she told Graphic Showbiz on Monday, March 23.

Kwame Macho stands out not only for its traditional Highlife and palmwine influences but also for its powerful message. The song highlights emotional, physical, and psychological abuse in relationships, drawing from both personal and shared experiences.

By tackling such sensitive themes through a genre historically dominated by men, Rama Blak is carving a unique space while amplifying women’s voices on critical social issues.

Born Awura-Ama Agyapong, Rama Blak has steadily built a reputation as a passionate advocate for authentic Highlife music. 

Her academic journey as a PhD student in ethnomusicology at the University of Ghana, Legon, has significantly shaped her artistic direction, allowing her to merge indigenous sounds with contemporary influences.

Her musical journey began with her debut single Anansesem in 2018, which introduced her to the Ghanaian music scene. 

Since then, she has collaborated with respected names including Highlife legend Kwame Brenya, Agya Osei Korankye, Atongo Zimba, and the Nkyinkyim Band.

In September 2025, she officially unveiled her album ?doy?wu at a concert, further cementing her place among the new generation of artistes championing Ghanaian-rooted music.

With the TGMA nomination, Rama Blak’s efforts to revive and modernise Highlife continue to gain recognition, positioning her as one of the promising voices shaping the future of the genre.
