Tourism Ambassador Afua Asantewaa is set to make a second attempt at the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest singing marathon (sing-a-thon) this December.
This ambitious challenge will take place from December 21–26, 2024, at Heroes' Park in Kumasi, the heart of Ghana’s cultural heritage.
Speaking on GTV's Breakfast Show yesterday, Asantewaa expressed her unwavering determination to conquer the record after her initial attempt in 2023 fell short of official recognition due to compliance issues.
"My determination to achieve this prestigious world record has motivated my return to the glass box this December," Asantewaa stated, urging supporters to keep her in their prayers.
In December 2023, Asantewaa sang continuously for an astounding 126 hours and 52 minutes, surpassing the standing record of 105 hours held by India’s Sunil Waghmare. Despite the feat attracting global attention, the GWR disqualified her attempt in March 2024 due to technical non-compliance with their guidelines.
While disappointing, her first attempt became a cultural phenomenon in Ghana, uniting the nation through music and showcasing its rich heritage to the world.
Held at Akwaaba Village in Accra, the event featured a playlist of exclusively Ghanaian songs, attracting thousands of supporters and giving a significant boost to the local tourism sector.
For her second attempt, Asantewaa is leaving no stone unturned. She has begun rigorous preparations, combining vocal training with physical endurance exercises. In collaboration with the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), she is securing copyright clearances for her extensive repertoire.
"We've learned valuable lessons from our first attempt," she explained. "This time, we're implementing stricter documentation procedures and have assembled a professional team to oversee every aspect of the attempt."
The Kumasi venue was chosen to highlight the city's significance as Ghana’s cultural capital and to involve more communities in this historic event.
Support from Stakeholders
The Ghana Tourism Authority and local officials have pledged their support for the six-day event, recognising its potential to boost domestic and international tourism. The timing aligns perfectly with Ghana’s peak tourist season, drawing visitors and diaspora members during the festive period.
Organisers have planned enhanced crowd management and facilities to accommodate thousands of anticipated attendees at Heroes' Park. Additionally, the entire attempt will be livestreamed, offering global audiences a front-row seat to this extraordinary event.
