Robert Charlotte is one of 40 Ghanaian and international photographers who are part of Nuku Photo Festival Ghana, the country’s first festival for photographic encounters, exchanges, and story-telling. The festival runs from 12 to 21 September 2018. A variety of events – exhibitions, art talks, conferences, portfolio reviews, artist-in-residency, and more – take place in Accra, Tamale, Wa and Kumasi.

“We have offered Robert a safe and inspiring space, and our extensive network of photographers and creatives from within Nuku Studio, as well as the broader local photography community we are engaging with,” says Nii Obodai, Founder of Nuku Studio and Director of Nuku Photo Festival.

Robert Charlotte was born in Martinique in 1966. He focuses on producing portraits, which powerfully express the collective history of places and individual trajectories, especially in the Caribbean. His residency at the Nuku Photo Festival is his first stay in Africa.

“In this photographic project, through portraits, places visited or places of creation, I try to live this buried feeling of intimacy; I try to take, see, feel and bring to life this transatlantic dialogue to finally envisage, with strength and determination, a lucid and serene future,” says Robert Charlotte.

“The Embassy of France in Ghana, the Institut Français - Ghana, the Alliance Française of Accra and the Fondation Clément are pleased to support the residency of the French photographer Robert Charlotte from Martinique and to present his concluding exhibition. This event is a part of the wider project “African-Caribbean Transatlantic Artistic Dialogues” meant to stimulate the creation of new works by crossing ideas, languages, aesthetics and African - Caribbean territories through cross-residencies and to encourage transnational artistic and cultural exchanges. This project illustrates our deep belief in the virtues of dialogue and mutual understanding through art and science. Therefore, we will also work toward pursuing exchanges with the French Caribbean next year,” says Frédéric Dart, Director of Alliance Française Accra.

The exhibition will be open to the public until 14 October 2018. 

Nuku Photo Festival also collaborates with Alliance Française in Kumasi, where the exhibition “Women & Work” is organised in collaboration with Lensational. It showcases the first photography project of six young women and girls aged 14 to 28 from Ho whose work is now being exhibited outside of Ho for the first time.
