Alliance Francaise Accra presents “SEKUNDE”: Album launch and a concert by GYEDU- BLAY AMBOLLEY with his Sekondi Band on Saturday, 26th May at 7:30 pm at the Amphitheatre of Alliance Francaise Accra.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, affectionately known as the "Simigwa Do Man", was born in the port city of Sekondi-Takoradi, in the Western Region of Ghana. He is the first musician from Ghana to formally
incorporate rap forms into local highlife rhythms, the multi-talented, Gyedu Blay Ambolley celebrated his "Silver Jubilee" in music in 1998. He exploded on the music scene twenty-five years ago with a Jazzy Highlife sound called 'SIMIGWA-DO'.
Ambolley's early years of musical interest dates back to the age of eight, when he began playing with his father’s flute until he was able to teach himself how to play. His formal musical training came at the age of fourteen under the apprenticeship of "Uncle Bonku" who taught him the guitar. Ambolley has toured throughout West Africa, Europe, Canada, and the United States. He has performed on the same stage with some of the world’s most celebrated artists, such as Miriam Makeba of South Africa, the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti of Nigeria, the late George Howard, Angela Bofill, Norman Connors, Manu DeBango, Lakeside, Chikuzan Takahashi of Japan, Ricardo Estrada of Cuba, Mayuto Correa of Brazil and toured Ghana with Oscar Brashear and Michael Session. Because of his originality, his performances have left audiences raving and shouting for more. In June 2015, Ambolley received a citation in the USA from the City Council of Philadelphia read by Council
woman; Honorable Jannie Blackwell and Hon. Stanley J. Staughter in recognition of the musician’s contributions to Ghanaian music in the USA.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley launches his 32nd album called "Sekondi Town" on the 26th of May at 7:30 Pm with his Sekondi Band. His style of music has always brought joy and dancing to his audience and that is the expectation on the 26th at the Alliance Francaise Accra. Also on the bill is the one and only Pozo Hayes and some few acts. An exciting night to be and don't be a dropout.
