Mr Godfred Offei, Chairman of Ghana Haulage Transport Drivers Union (GHTDU) has appealed to government and stakeholders in the transport industry to provide more warehouses to ease the congestion at Takoradi Port.
He said "Inadequate warehouses and storage facilities have made our operations in carting goods for export difficult and retard our business."
Mr Offei made the appeal at a press conference in Takoradi on Tuesday.
He said challenges facing haulage truck drivers if not solved could create congestion along major routes leading to the Takoradi Port but with the provision of more warehouses would reduce the burden on drivers, promote good business environment and facilitate transportation of goods to the port.
"Provision of well constructed truck terminals and rest houses would promote road safety and ensure effective revenue mobilisation for government and Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA)," he said.
Mr Offei said some physical barriers affecting the road haulage industry and impacting negatively on trade include, trans-boundary and security issues for transit goods resulting in harassment and unnecessary delays at borders which lead to high cost.
