Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc, has been honoured with the Zik Pan-African Award for Transformational Leadership in Banking and Financial Innovation, as the bank continues to expand its presence in Ghana, where it now operates 43 branches.

The award recognises Dr. Umeoji’s nearly three decades of banking experience and more than 20 years in executive management at Zenith Bank, as well as her contribution to banking innovation, leadership and financial sector development.

Under her leadership, Zenith Bank has continued to strengthen its operations across its markets, with its growing Ghana footprint now comprising 43 branches, bringing the institution close to a 50-branch presence in the country.

Dr. Umeoji said the bank’s growth and achievements were rooted in the vision of its founder, Dr. Jim Ovia, who established Zenith Bank in 1990 on what she described as a solid tripod of People, Technology and Service.

“At Zenith Bank, these values have been embedded in our DNA by our visionary founder, Dr. Jim Ovia, CFR. He founded Zenith Bank in 1990, on the solid tripod of people, technology and service,” she said.

According to her, those three pillars have guided the development of the bank’s workforce, its adoption of technology and its commitment to delivering quality services to customers.

“Through these pillars, he has inspired purposeful leadership in every member of the Zenith family and has nurtured leaders who continue to champion excellence and drive positive change across industries,” she said.

Dr. Umeoji said the bank had grown into one of Africa’s leading financial institutions while maintaining the culture of professionalism, sound corporate governance and excellence on which it was founded.

Under her leadership, Zenith Bank has commissioned a branch in Paris and established operations in Manchester, adding to its subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Côte d’Ivoire and Kenya. Dr. Umeoji, who chairs Zenith Bank UK, has been central to this international expansion, which positions the institution as an African financial group of growing global reach.

She said the institution remained committed to expanding access to financial services and creating value for the communities in which it operates.

“At Zenith Bank, we remain committed to widening access to financial services, promoting financial inclusion, improving lives, and creating lasting value for the people and communities we serve,” she said.

The expansion of Zenith Bank’s operations in Ghana, now with 43 branches, reflects the institution’s broader strategy to deepen its presence and extend financial services to more customers.

Dr. Umeoji also acknowledged the contribution of the bank’s employees and the management and staff of Zenith Bank Ghana to the institution’s growth.

“To the Directors and the entire staff of Zenith Bank Ghana…thank you for your presence and for your commitment to making the Zenith brand what it is today. This honour belongs to all of us,” she said.

The award was presented at the seventh edition of the Zik International Peace and Leadership Award Lecture, an event established to celebrate the legacy of Nigeria’s first President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and recognise individuals whose work reflects leadership, service and nation-building.

The Zik Lecture at the ceremony was delivered by the Chief Whip for the Majority in Parliament, Hon. Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor.

Dr. Umeoji said the recognition was not merely an acknowledgement of her past achievements but a call to greater service.

“It is a profound honour for me to also stand here today as a recipient of the Zik Award for Transformational Leadership in Banking and Financial Innovation. This award is not merely a recognition of past achievements, but a renewed call to greater service,” she said.

Her career combines banking leadership with extensive academic and professional training. She is an alumna of Harvard  Business School, Columbia Business School, MIT Sloan School of Management and Wharton Business School, among other institutions.

She holds degrees in Sociology, Accounting and Law, as well as a Master of Laws, an MBA and a Doctorate in Business Administration, with her doctoral research focused on inspirational leadership and people management.

Beyond banking, Dr. Umeoji has been involved in philanthropy and youth empowerment. She founded the Pink Breath Cancer Care Foundation, which supports cancer awareness and patients, and the Adorable Foundation, which focuses on education and support for indigent children, particularly girls.

Her contributions to banking, leadership and nation-building have also earned her several recognitions, including Nigeria’s Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2022.

Reflecting on the legacy of Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dr. Umeoji said leadership should ultimately be measured by its impact on society rather than by titles.

“His life reminds us that leadership is not measured merely by titles or personal achievements, but by the positive and lasting difference we make in the lives of others,” she said.

She said Zenith Bank would continue to focus on purposeful leadership, financial inclusion and sustainable value creation as it expands its operations across Africa.

“The future of our continent will be shaped by people who choose purpose over comfort, service over self and vision over limitation,” she said.
