Fidelity Bank Ghana has donated 50 laptops to the University of Ghana in support of the University’s “One Student, One Laptop” initiative, reinforcing the Bank’s commitment to advancing digital access and strengthening collaboration between academia and industry.

The donation was presented during a visit by Fidelity Bank’s Managing Director, Julian Kingsley Opuni, and his team to the University of Ghana, following an earlier engagement between the Bank and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, aimed at deepening collaboration between the two institutions.

Speaking at the presentation, Mr Opuni noted that the donation fulfils a commitment made during the Bank’s earlier visit to the University, where both institutions discussed ways to create meaningful impact for students and the broader Ghanaian economy.

“Last year we paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor to explore how we could deepen our relationship and identify opportunities for collaboration that create real impact,” Mr Opuni said

He added: “One of the key initiatives the Vice-Chancellor highlighted was the ‘One Student, One Laptop’ programme, which stood out as an important priority. As a Ghanaian bank whose fortunes are closely tied to the growth of this country, we see education as a critical investment. Universities like the University of Ghana play a central role in shaping the future leadership of the country, and we believe supporting initiatives like this is part of how we contribute to that journey.”

He also indicated that Fidelity Bank and the University are working toward finalising a Memorandum of Understanding that will create structured internship opportunities for University of Ghana students at the Bank.

“We are keen to work with the University on internship programmes that allow some of the most promising students to gain practical experience within the Bank,” Mr Opuni explained.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, expressed appreciation to Fidelity Bank for honouring its commitment and supporting the University’s efforts to equip students with the tools they need for the modern learning environment.

“I would like to express my deep gratitude to Fidelity Bank,” Professor Amfo said. “You visited us last year, and we had a productive conversation about possible areas of collaboration. Today, I am excited to see that you have kept your promise and returned with good news for our students.”

She added that providing students with access to digital tools is essential for developing the critical thinking and technological capabilities required in the 21st century.

“When students have access to their own devices, they are able to explore, innovate and learn in ways that may even surprise us. The ‘One Student, One Laptop’ initiative is therefore an important step toward equipping our students with the digital skills they need to thrive,” Professor Amfo noted.

Professor Amfo emphasised that partnerships between universities and industry are increasingly essential in preparing students for the rapidly changing demands of the job market.

“As a university, we cannot shoulder the responsibility of preparing students for the job market alone. It is simply impossible. By the time a curriculum is developed, and students progress through their studies, the demands of the workplace may already have changed. The best way forward is through strong partnerships with industry,” she said.

She welcomed the ongoing discussions around internship opportunities and broader collaboration with Fidelity Bank.
