Newmont has emerged as a standout performer at the 2025 Ghana Mining Industry Awards (GMIA), earning multiple accolades for innovation, environmental stewardship, and community development.
The company’s Ahafo South mine was named Best Green Mine and Best Performer in Innovation. It was also 1st Runner-up for Best Performer in Environmental Management, 2nd Runner-up for Best Performer in Exploration (Senior Category), and 2nd Runner-up for Best Corporate Social Investment Project. These awards highlight the mine’s leadership in sustainability, operational excellence, and innovative mining practices.
Newmont’s Ahafo North mine, the company’s newest large-scale gold operation, was recognised as 1st Runner-up for Best Corporate Social Investment Project.
Individual honours included Abena Acheampomaa Ankomah, Newmont’s Lead for Communities and Social Performance at Ahafo North, who was named Female Mining Professional of the Year (Non-Technical) for her leadership in community engagement and sustainable development.
The industry also posthumously honoured the late Kwame Addo-Kufuor Jnr. with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Addo-Kufuor, former Head of Government Relations for Newmont Ghana and President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, contributed significantly to Ghana’s mining sector.
Speaking on the awards, Danquah Addo-Yobo, Country Manager for Newmont Ghana, said: “This has been a defining year for Newmont. We successfully transitioned Ahafo North into an operational mine, while Ahafo South achieved 10 million ounces of gold production. These awards remind us of our responsibility to communities and the country.”
