After almost two months of disruption in power supply, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) last Saturday commissioned a new 33kV sub-transmission feeder to improve power supply to Obuasi and its environs.
The new sub-transmission feeder would receive increased capacity from the upgraded Ghana Grid Company’s 50/66MVA transformer to serve customers within the catchment areas.
GRIDCO’s Bulk Supply Point transformer was damaged by a fire outbreak about two months ago, and this disrupted power supply to homes and businesses within Obuasi and its environs.
Speaking at the commissioning, Peter Kofi Fletcher, General Manager, Ashanti Sub-Transmission, ECG, commended the team for their collaboration and resilience that made the project possible.
He said ECG was able to commission the project through the collaboration among the teams from ECG, GRIDCo and the contractors working together to achieve the feat.
He particularly commended AngloGold Ashanti for supporting some of the communities with power from their dedicated transformer during the crisis.
“Today, we can confidently assure Obuasi and its surrounding areas of a stable and reliable electricity supply.
This project is not just about power lines and transformers; it is about keeping homes lit, businesses thriving, and industries running,” he said.
He further extended ECG’s appreciation to the hardworking teams from Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ashanti South, the contractor, GRIDCo, and other stakeholders who braved the rains until the successful commissioning deep into the night on the day.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to investing in infrastructure to guarantee reliable and efficient growth in line with Ghana’s broader energy and industrial development goals.
