The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is demanding the prioritisation of three key areas in mining to drive sustainable growth in the sector.
Speaking at the 97th Annual General Meeting of the Ghana Chamber of Mines in Accra, Acting Chief Director of the Ministry, Innocent Haligah, stressed the need to expand local content participation, enhance value addition and the adoption of innovative technologies and skills to transform the industry.
“We need to accelerate three transformation priorities,” he stated.
“First, local content expansion bringing more of our people into the sector. I’m particularly pleased that the President has noted that the majority of the over 11,000 people employed in the mining sector are Ghanaians.”
He continued, “Second, we must add value to our mineral resources. We need to move beyond the export of raw materials and find better ways of processing and refining them locally to benefit the economy more significantly.”
“The third area is innovation in the mining ecosystem. This involves adopting the right technologies and focusing on skills development to ensure long-term success in the sector,” he added.
Haligah noted that these strategies are essential to unlocking the full potential of Ghana’s mineral wealth and delivering greater economic benefits to its citizens.
