The current insurance penetration rate in Ghana is less than 2 percent, according to Mr. Francis Gota, CEO of AYo Intermediaries Ghana, a subsidiary of MTN Group. He made these remarks at the launch of a new auto insurance policy, “aYo Pay and Drive,” in Accra. He, however, noted that with the appropriate investments in innovation and technology in the sector, the two percent would be a thing of the past.
Mr. Gota said that the policy was the result of a partnership between MTN Ghana, MTN Mobile Money, and Sanlam Insurance, which gave vehicle owners control, confidence, and peace of mind by offering flexibility in purchasing motor insurance as and when needed using their mobile phones.
“It’s been seven years since we started the motion of redefining the definition of insurance, and today, as we stand, we celebrate another milestone,” he noted, describing the auto insurance policy as a ground-breaking one.
“This policy has been meticulously crafted with the needs of the customers in mind, especially those who own multiple cars, cab hailing services, taxi drivers, and private car owners who cannot afford upfront coverage,” he disclosed.
He announced a pilot phase for aYo Pay & Drive, encouraging user feedback to further innovate and improve the product. He commended all their partners, including the NIC (National Insurance Commission), for allowing them to pilot the initiative.
Ms. Mabel Nana Nyarkoa Porbley, General Manager of Sanlam General Insurance, said that the policy would define innovative insurance in the Ghanaian market. She pointed out that this new solution would make the purchase of insurance more convenient.
She noted that the product allowed vehicle owners or drivers to purchase insurance for short periods, offering flexibility with durations like 7 days, 10 days, or any period they desired.
Ms. Porbley said that customer needs and wants had changed, hence the need for insurance providers to provide innovative solutions.
This policy, she emphasised, was not a usage-based product but a time-based product.
Users receive personalised quotes that allow them to make immediate decisions and thus reduce their carbon footprint as part of their environmental consciousness.
Chief Superintendent of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, Alexander Obeng said that the MTTD and other road agencies have been playing a critical role in assisting vehicle owners and road users to have safer mobility. He commended MTN Ghana and Sanlam for the aYo Pay and Drive policy. He urged all road users to insure their cars in accordance with Section 125 of the Road Service Act.
Ayo Pay and Drive can be accessed on app.ayoghana.com and provides third-party fire and theft insurance, third party insurance, and comprehensive insurance. It is available for car hiring companies, automobile dealers, fleet owners, and private car lenders, among others.
