El Gestor de Infraestructuras de Telecomunicaciones de Guinea Ecuatorial (GITGE) is officially inaugurating Equatorial Guinea’s new Ceiba-2 fiber optic cable project during a private event on June 4 in Malabo.

Keynotes for the launch of the state-of-the-art fiber optic cable include the President of Equatorial Guinea, H.E. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, the Minister of Telecommunications of Equatorial Guinea, H.E. Eucario Bacale Angüe, and the Director General of GITGE, Mr. Oscar Ondo Ngomo.

The Ceiba-2 fiber optic cable, which connects from Malabo to Kribi, Cameroon, and Bata, Equatorial Guinea provides an invaluable redundancy in Equatorial Guinea’s connection to the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) fiber optic cable in the event of maintenance or repair on the existing Ceiba-1 cable. The Ceiba-2 cable, which complements the Ceiba-1 cable running from Bata to Malabo, also increases the country’s total capacity, thereby increasing Internet speeds and reducing the cost for residents. It is also the country’s first international fiber optic connection, marking a significant milestone for GITGE and for the nation.

Construction on the Ceiba-2 cable began in October 2016, and it was completed in March 2017. GITGE’s fiber optic infrastructure network includes 400 km of submarine cable and a technical capacity of 40 Gbps. Capacity can be increased to 100 Gbps to meet demand in the future.

El Gestor de Infraestructuras de Telecomunicaciones de Guinea Ecuatorial (GITGE) was created by presidential decree in January 2011 to manage and operate Equatorial Guinea’s new and rapidly expanding telecommunications infrastructure, including management of the ACE connection with Equatorial Guinea. The state owned company provides capacity to Internet service providers in Equatorial Guinea, and grants equal access to services under an open and nondiscriminatory access.
