The South Korean government revealed its plan to build a UN center for sustainable development policy promotion in Incheon's Songdo International City next year.
For this project, the Ministry of Environment, the city of Incheon, and Yonsei University signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Thursday
morning agreeing to jointly build the "UN Project Office for Sustainable Development in Asia and Pacific " inside Yonsei's Songdo Campus in the first half of next year.
The office, carrying six UN officials, will serve as a stronghold to promote South Korea's green growth policy across the Asia Pacific region,
with further plans to expand to other parts of the world.
The ministry said the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) initially proposed the idea in 2007 to establish a UN office in Songdo after receiving positive reviews on South Korea's success in sustainable development policy.
Songdo International City is a global business center being developed along the waterfront of Incheon, 65 km from Seoul, anticipated to be
completed in 2015.
